Altyre South Local Event Saturday 11th March

Event Summary

Our next Saturday local event will be held in a new area, Altyre South, mapped by David Ritchie. The area includes a mixture of mature coniferous woodland with some patches of deciduous woodland.  Runnability varies from fast to slow depending on the density of the canopy and the height of the heather understorey. The Light Green course will feature a butterfly loop in a more interesting part of the woods. Both the Yellow and Orange courses will feature a taped leg in the middle of each course.

We will be basing the event in the car park of the Glasgow School of Arts, on the Altyre Estate (w3w:///ducks.dull.loom). PARKING IS RESTRICTED SO PLEASE LIFT SHARE IF POSSIBLE. Thanks are due to the Altyre Estate for permission to use the woodlands, Glasgow School of Arts for use of the car park, and Friends of Blair's Loch for access to the Bothy Room and toilets, at the south end of the loch.

Directions and Parking

The car park for the event is approximately 800 m along an estate road that leaves the A940 Forres - Grantown road approximately 4 km south of Forres (w3w///folks:sunshine:jetted). The turn off will be signed with Orienteering notices. Follow the road 800 m to the Glasgow School of Art (prominent Italianate buildings).  Our parking area is beyond the School of Art. PARKING IS RESTRICTED SO PLEASE LIFT SHARE IF POSSIBLE.
Toilets are located at Blair's Loch Boathouse buildings, at the south end of the loch, 500 m from the car park.

Start and Finish

The route to the start (approximately 200 m) will be clearly taped from the car park. The start is in the woods close to the Altyre chapel. It is very important to follow the tapes, which run alongside the road that leads in from the Grantown Road.  We are asked not to use the road in front of the Estate owners' property.

The route from the finish (approximately 300 m) back to the car park returns via the route to the start, and will be clearly marked with red and white tape. You must not use the track through the Estate Yard to the north of the finish.

Courses

Three courses are on offer - please note that distances are subject to final controlling. The map scale is 1:7,500

Yellow: 2.1 km
This course will have a taped section linking two controls in the middle of the course.

Orange: 2.6 km
This course will have a taped section linking two controls in the middle of the course.

Light green: 4.1 km
For those of you running light green, you can expect the novelty of a butterfly loop, with a common central control and controls forming to two 'wings'. Expect to see runners travelling in different directions, and make sure you punch the controls in the correct order - and you will need to punch the central control in the butterfly three times!

Terrain

The terrain is mixed coniferous with some broadleaved woodland, and varying amounts of heather and rough understorey. Runnability varies across the area, depending on the density of the coniferous canopy, brashings in the open areas and the height of the heather understory. There is a clear track network, with some smaller paths and rides. The terrain is undulating, and the climb on all courses is modest. The southern part of the area, visited by the Light Green course, has some intricate microrelief.
