Event Summary

Welcome to our April event of our 2025 fixtures calendar.  This time, we will be at Aldroughty Woods, near Elgin.  This area was last used for a competitive orienteering event nearly 10 years ago.  The routegadget is linked here: 2015-11-08 Aldroughty (TD4-5).

Directions and Parking

Directions.   From the West, take the A96 towards Elgin.  Approximately 200m before the 'Riverside Kitchens' showroom, turn right at the minor road signed 'Aldroughty' (w3w:///master.swear.seat).  The event will be signed from this junction.  Follow that road south for approximately 150m into the parking area and follow marshals instructions.

From the East, take the A96 through Elgin, towards Forres.  After passing the Eight Acres Hotel, continue for approximately 1Km, past the 'Riverside Kitchens' showroom, to the minor road junction signed 'Aldroughty'.  Turn left at that junction (w3w:///master.swear.seat) and continue south for approximately 150m, into the parking area and follow marshals instructions.

Be aware: Single alternate traffic lights on A96 in the vicinity of the turning into Aldroughty.

Parking.  Strictly NO camper vans or motor homes.

Car parking is very limited, so please share transport wherever possible.  

As a thank you to local residents we are collecting £2 per car to donate to Help for Heroes - please have coins ready.

Toilets.  No toilets at the event, please use the nearest public toilets in Elgin (Cooper Park).  Tesco and Asda also have toilets. Parking, Start and Finish are in a residential area please act accordingly.

Start and Finish

Start and Finish.  The start is approximately 100m uphill from the car park.  Download is approximately 130m along a flat road from the finish. The route to the start and from the finish will be taped.  You must report to download by 1330 hours, even if you retire.  

At registration

Courses

Subject to final controlling:

  • TD2 - Yellow.  2.3km.  Relatively easy, shorter course. NOT suitable for buggies. Ideal for novice and younger orienteers.
  • TD3 - Orange. 2.9km.  Moderate technical difficulty.
  • TD3 - Red.  3.8km.  Moderate technical difficulty but longer, for those wanting to run further!
  • TD4 - Light Green, 3.1 km. For those progressing from Orange.
  • TD5 - Green.  4.9km. Suitable for experienced orienteers.

Terrain

Planner's Notes

  • The area is predominantly mature beech trees. Some courses will encounter dead bracken and knee high heather, fallen trees and lots of branches.  There are mapped ruined fences in the area; some rides and extraction lanes are indistinct on the ground.
  • Red, Orange, Light Green and Green courses all have double sided maps, flip the map over for part two of your course.
  • The Yellow course is not suitable for buggies.

Entries are online via SI Entries only.  

  • Entries open online from 7 April 2025 and will close at 23:59 pm on Thursday 24 April 2025 at normal prices.  Online entries can also be edited/changed/cancelled until this closure, subject to map availability. 
  • Very limited Entry on the Day subject to an additional £1 and map availability.  

Entry Fees: 

  • Senior (21 and older) BOF Member - £5.00.
  • Senior SOA-only Member - £6.00.
  • Senior Non-Member - £7.00 
  • Junior (20 and younger) and Student BOF/SOA Members - £3.50 
  • Junior/Student Non-Member - £4.50 

£1 discount if using own SI-Card.

Final Details

Safety Information

  • Competitors take part in this event at their own risk.
  • Competitors must be aware of, and take care to avoid, other path users on the courses.
  • Please be aware of trip hazards, slopes and steps, uneven surfaces, litter and dog fouling, and low branches near control sites. 
  • Note there are ticks in area, please check carefully after you run.
  • Competitors are advised that fallen trees in one part of the competition area have brought down a strip of telegraph cable from head high to a few inches from the ground.  This hazard has been clearly marked in black and yellow hazard tape. 
  • All competitors on the orange, red and green courses cross the minor/unclassified road from the A96 to the car parking area.  Though traffic density is likely to be very low, please check the road for any traffic before crossing.  A control has been placed on each the road sides to encourage you to stop and check before crossing.
  • Participants are advised that the competition area is bounded by the main A96 road to the north.  This road is out of bounds and there should be no reason to cross it or run along it.
  • Please be careful and avoid collisions with members of the public and other competitors.

Safety & Risk

  • All Competitors take part at their own risk and a choose a course that matches their experience and fitness.

  • Yellow and White course competitors must collect their maps from registration before going to the start.

  • You MUST report to Download by Course Closing Time

  • Be careful on/near/crossing any roads

  • All competitors must wear warm clothing and /or waterproof clothing as appropriate.

  • Competitors are advised to notify the organiser of any relevant medical conditions and should complete any details on SI entries.

Important Information

Safety and Risk: A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. You MUST report to download by course closing time.

Insurance: If you have joined an orienteering club, or are competing in one of your first 3 events, then you are covered by our public liability insurance.

Privacy: when participating in our events/activities your name may appear in the results section of this website or in newspaper reports. Read our Privacy Policy to see how we look after your personal data.

Hired Si Cards: We provide loan of these if you don't have your own but if you lose it there will be a £30 charge for its replacement.
